Beginner 1

Would you like to embark on learning the 4th most spoken language in the world or to go back to your roots? This course will get you started. It is designed to provide the true beginner with basic linguistic competence to understand and use daily expressions common to any part of the Portuguese-speaking world. Within contextualized everyday settings, you practice sharing personal information, meeting people, interacting in a café or a restaurant and discussing everyday activities.

Prerequisites: No prior knowledge of Portuguese is expected.

Section 1: Mondays & Wednesdays, 10:30 am – 12:20 pm

Beginner 2

Do you have some Portuguese basics and wish to learn some more? Then come and join the Beginner 2 course! This course focuses on practicing Portuguese language skills in authentic and semi-authentic situations.  Through a variety of activities, including role play, you gain the confidence to explore the language and build on your knowledge. You practice talking about leisure activities, making plans, discussing hobbies, talking about the weather, comparing habits, etc.

Prerequisites: Beginner 1 at this program or equivalent.

Beginner 3

If you know some Portuguese and want to continue learning Beginner 3 is the right course for you. At this level, you build upon what you have learned in Beginner 2. You work on your pronunciation, improve your formal Portuguese and learn some idiomatic expressions. You also develop greater fluency in everyday situations, such as shopping, describing people and places, giving directions, discussing instructions, describing a city and talking about traditions and past events.

Prerequisites: Beginner 2 at this program or equivalent.

Beginner 4

Beginner 4 is the right course for students who have some knowledge of Portuguese but still have some basic topics to cover or for those who have studied Portuguese in the past and wish to refresh it.  Within contextualized everyday settings, you chat about planning events, you practice writing letters/emails, talking about past, present and future events and experiences, you engage in conversations about your professional life and express appreciation or dissatisfaction. You work on all four skills (reading, writing, speaking and listening), refine your pronunciation and expand your vocabulary and range of idiomatic expressions.

Pre-intermediate 3

Building upon your knowledge, in Pre-Intermediate 3 you learn how to express yourself in somewhat more complex communicative scenarios. You practice giving basic information about health issues, scheduling an appointment, as well as discussing health support systems. You deal with daily news articles and various other spoken and written texts. You practice shopping, as well as exchanging and returning merchandise, complaining and expressing your opinion about the quality of the service. In the meanwhile, your writing skills and your pronunciation continue to improve!

Prerequisites: Pre-intermediate 2 at this program or equivalent.

Portuguese Special Courses
Basic Portuguese: Mini-course

Would you like to learn some basic Portuguese without engaging in a longer regular program? Then this 12-hour course is the right one for you! It is designed to provide students with basic linguistic competence to understand and use daily expressions aimed at satisfying immediate needs. Within contextualized everyday settings, you practice greeting people, introducing yourself and others, sharing personal information, interacting in a café or a restaurant, getting around town and shopping. 

Tuition fee: 660 QAR
Textbook: No textbook required for this course.
Course duration: 29 Sept – 3 Nov 2017, 12 hours

Prerequisites: No prior knowledge of Portuguese is expected.
