Textbooks can be bought in CHSS bookstore in the LAS building. The bookstore opening hours are from 12:00 pm till 5:00 pm during week days.

Survival Arabic

Since you are living in Qatar now, you must be interested in acquiring basic Arabic language skills over a short period! If this sounds like you, you should consider taking this course. In this course, you learn the reading and writing and acquire speaking and listening skills through a variety of everyday situations. You learn how to greet and address people properly, introduce yourself and your family members, how to socialize, how to tell the time and date. Through role-play and every day simulated situations, you will practice telling your address in details to a friend who will visit you or to a restaurant who will deliver a meal to you. You will learn the Arabic numbers and practice contexts in which you will have to use them! You will be introduced to some basic grammatical structures such as forming and answering simple questions. Specifically, the present tense will be studied so that you will be able to construct simple sentences on your own. Language instruction is taught in the context of Qatari and Middle Eastern culture. The class material is written in Arabic. Extracurricular activities are organized in order to enrich your Arabic learning experience.

Arabic Beginner 1

If you have finished the Survival Arabic or you already have some basic knowledge of Arabic, you must be asking “What is next?”! The perfect answer is to consider this course! It is the true beginning! In it, you start broadening speaking, listening, reading and writing skills, as well as acquiring more cultural awareness. In addition to the structures and topics learned in the survival level, you start learning the essential sentence structures, introductory conversational patterns and basic grammar so that you can begin to create with the language and engage in practical everyday situations. Typically, you will learn how to describe your home, your daily routines, and to successfully handle any situation related to a supermarket or to a restaurant. New topics also include but are not limited to greetings, polite expressions, asking and answering questions, and exchanging personal information. The present tense is practiced as well as the basic sentence structure. Supplementary speaking, listening, reading, and writing materials will be used. You will also discuss topics of Arabic culture and immersed in outside of class activities that supplement the curriculum content.

Arabic Beginner 2

Now that you have completed Arabic Beginner 1 you are curious to explore further. Moreover, it gets easier. In this course, you gain more practical experience, learn more sophisticated grammatical concepts and how to implement them in your speech and expand your vocabulary for a greater variety of situations. More specifically, the present, past, future tenses are extensively practiced in conversation in addition to the verb patterns and the verbal nouns. Speaking topics will build on what was learned in both survival and beginner 1 levels to include visiting the doctor, making reservations, and describing the weather. You will also practice speaking about present, past and future events.  Also Supplementary speaking, listening, reading, and writing materials are used. Language instruction takes place in the context of learning about Arabic culture. You will be invited and encouraged to participate in activities organized outside the classroom setting that help you get engaged to the Arabic language.

Arabic Beginner 3

You are getting there! You are almost at the end of the beginner stage. This course helps you move to the intermediate level of proficiency as defined by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages Proficiency Guidelines (ACTFL). This course will consolidate what you have learned in the previous levels!  In order for you to expand your vocabulary, you work with a variety of authentic spoken and written texts.  You will practice speaking extensively about your friends, your favorite books, movies, trips, your home country, your school life your home city, neighbors, relatives, hobbies, etc.  You will be more involved in presentation-like class activities and receive constructive feedback both from your peers and from the instructor. Speaking, listening, reading and writing all play an integral part in this course. This course has a strong cultural component, which helps in the learning of the language.

Arabic Intermediate 1

You have completed the beginner series! Now what? It’s time to get ready to build on the skills you have already acquired. As you now have a strong knowledge of the basic structures and a good reserve of vocabulary, you are ready to proceed on exploring the Arabic language and culture in greater depth!

This course will expand your range of vocabulary and grammar knowledge. As a result, your communicative skills will develop and you will be able to successfully engage in conversations with native speakers.

You are now in the middle of the intermediate series and you have acquired more knowledge! Keep up! In this course, you build upon the skills you have acquired in Intermediate 1. You perform more complex communication tasks and more self-confidence. You also learn to take linguistic risks in daily communicative situations.

Arabic Conversation 1

If you have completed the beginner series at this program or elsewhere and wish to focus on your communication skills away from a textbook this is the right course for you. You use the basic grammatical structures and vocabulary that you have learned and build upon them. Learning takes place through conversation and communication. The course is taught using only authentic and customized communicative materials watching Arabic movies, listening to Arabic music, songs, and viewing cartoons. You also read materials from the Internet and print media about current events and discuss them in class. You expand your vocabulary and grammatical means of expression and improve your fluency. The class is conducted in Arabic.

Arabic Conversation 2

In this course you continue to develop your communication skills. If you have completed Intermediate 1 or 2 levels or equivalent this is the right course for you. The course is taught using only authentic and customized communicative materials watching Arabic movies, listening to Arabic music, songs, and viewing cartoons. A typical class includes intensive practice in conversation with emphasis on vocabulary building and improving fluency in speaking, reading, and listening. Classes are conducted exclusively in Arabic.  You read an article, write a summary, make a presentation to the class, answer questions from other students, and engage in conversation.
