Dr. Ashraf Mohamed Abdel Fattah's Bio

Dr Ashraf Abdel Fattah is currently an Assistant Professor at the Translation and Interpreting Institute (TII), Hamad Bin Khalifa University. He has an MA in Linguistics (with distinction) from the University of Westminster, UK (1994), and a PhD in Translation Studies from the University of Manchester, UK (2010), with an extensive 30-year professional experience in translation, interpreting, journalism and translation teaching.

Before joining the TII as a full-time Assistant Professor, Dr Abdel Fattah was a Senior Interpreter at Aljazeera Arabic Channel in Doha for 4 years and the Middle East Bulletin Editor at the Associated Press Television News (APTN) in London for 13 years.

From 1989 to1997, Dr Abdel Fattah worked as the first Arabic Language Editor at Amnesty International’s International Secretariat in London, with full responsibility for establishing and running the entire AI’s Arabic language programme. From 1988 to 2011, he was also a visiting lecturer in Linguistics, Translation Studies and Arabic at the University of Westminster (formerly, Polytechnic of Central London), where he taught Specialized Translation; Translation Theory; Linguistics & Discourse Analysis for Translators; Arabic Grammar & Stylistics; Morphology; Generative Grammar; Systemic Functional Linguistics; Semantics and Arabic to non-native speakers.

Research Interests

Contrastive analysis of clause combining and conjunctive resources in English and Arabic from a systemic functional perspective.

Contrastive appraisal analysis of news discourse.

Media translation.

Translation-specific features and corpus-based translation studies.
