HBKU’s Translation and Interpreting Institute Opens Registration for Business and Finance Workshop
The Translation and Interpreting Institute (TII), part of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHSS) at Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU), is accepting registrations for its Translation in Business and Finance workshop, taking place from February 24 to 27.
The workshop, to be delivered by Hisham Ali, senior translation specialist, Translation and Training Center (TTC) at TII, will help attendees develop the skills required to become an effective translator in the business sector using a range of hands-on techniques. Attendees will learn the fundamentals of working with business documents, including how to edit, revise, proofread and adapt accounting documents and financial statements.
Nada A. Al-Mahmeed, Translation and Training Center Acting Director, said: “The workshop forms part of TII’s aim to promote continuous learning and personal development. Translation in the business and finance sectors is a specialized skill and one that is in high demand across businesses in the region. We invite translators or those with an interest in business translation to enroll for the workshop, which will equip participants with the skills and confidence to translate business documents seamlessly.”
The self-paced workshop will introduce participants to the fundamentals of financial translation through a theoretical and practical approach that puts to work a plethora of practice-oriented translation approaches.
Topics to be covered during the four-day workshop include the Genre of Financial Translation; Risk Management in Financial Translation; Machine Translation in Managing Fast Turnarounds; and Pragmatic Factors and Market-Specific Differences.
After completing the workshop, participants will have the ability to manage the risks associated with translation choices and decisions; be able to identify and manage the pragmatic challenges in translating financial documents; use machine translation platforms efficiently as assisting tools; search for business-specific terminology in specialized resources; and gain knowledge in the peculiarities of the various types of financial texts.
The workshop is recommended for graduate students, bilingual financial professionals, and professional translators. It will be held in room A015 at the Penrose House (formerly LAS building) in Education City from 4pm – 7pm.
