11th International Translation Conference

11th International Translation Conference

COVID 19 and Current Changes in Translation
and Interpreting Studies

Online Event

Overview:

This conference aims to explore how the pandemic has triggered a range of upheavals, encompassing the international arena, the academic experience, and the mobilization of national sentiments. These turning-points will be analyzed within diverse cultural and historical contexts, not as moments of sudden rupture, but as a series of short, medium and long-term changes and transdisciplinary shifts.

The Story:

The Annual International Translation Conference was first launched in 2010 as collaboration between Bloomsbury Qatar Foundation Publishing and Dr. Amal Al-Malki, professor at Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar. The conference was launched to create a Gulf-based platform to discuss issues related to translation at both the theoretical and practical levels. The collaboration with Bloomsbury Qatar Foundation Publishing was a very fruitful one and lasted until 2014. Upon the establishment of the Translation and Interpreting Institute, Dr. Al-Malki has continued organizing the conference within her new capacity in the Institute. The Conference has taken different forms and had several focuses through its 10 editions. The conference has evolved into a fully-fledged scholarly conference promoting the vision of the Translation and Interpreting Institute and aiming at realizing its mission.

Starting from 2021, TII will organize the International Translation Conference as a biennial event to allow for more research time and wealthier conversations. Its 11th version will be on March 24 and the format will be a series of online presentations and two keynote speeches.

Chair's Welcome Message:

The planet has been ravaged by the COVID-19 pandemic in a manner that has radically changed our lives and has far-reaching ramifications both in the present and for the future. This has given rise to strong political, economic, social and cultural tensions. It has had an impact on both the conceptual and practical dimensions of academia, with the emergence of on-line teaching and blended learning. Conferences went online, virtualizing physical human contact and converting three-dimensional communication into two-dimensional screen exchanges. It is imperative to keep the university operating, though now at a distance. Since one of the university’s vital roles is to be at the forefront of adaptation and innovation to guide society out of its predicaments, it is imperative that we explore the changes that this situation requires and conceptualize them. It is in this context that TII  welcomes you to its 11th International Translation Conference, entitled “COVID 19 and Current Changes in Translation and Interpreting Studies.
