Turkish Course Descriptions for Adults

This course is designed for students who have no or little knowledge of Turkish to acquire speaking skills of the basic Turkish language in the real world setting. 

This course will provide students with a variety of social contexts through role play activities. Students will learn and practice common phrases they might encounter in daily life situations. Classroom activities in this course will allow students to utilize their vocabulary, ask questions, and engage in daily life conversations.

Prerequisites: No prior knowledge of Turkish is expected.

Textbook:The instructor will provide students with all necessary leaning materials.

This course will introduce students to the study of the Turkish language which is designed for beginners in spoken and written Turkish. It is suitable for those who wish to acquire a small amount of the language to get the most out of a visit to Turkey

We assume no previous knowledge of foreign language learning and avoid grammatical terminology where possible. Where such terms are unavoidable, we explain them in plain lay English. Completing this course will give you basic knowledge of both spoken and written Turkish. Below is a tentative list of topics we will be covering during this stage;

Topics & Vocabulary & Grammar:

- Introducing yourself: greetings - saying "hello:, "Goodbye" and "How are you?" 

- The Turkish alphabet & numbers: 10-100 and basic colors

- Turkish family members

- Daily life & neighbors

- Basic question words

 

Cultural Content:

- The language family that Turkish belongs to 

- The relationship between Turkish, European and Middle Eastern languages

- Titles - Mr, Mrs; addressing others in appropriate ways

- Difference between singular and plural "you"

- Greetings

- Turkish snacks and drinks

- Reading signs

 

Skills Work:

- Speaking activities: Using classroom conversation regularly

- Simple chats about the climates and months

- Listening activities

- Writing practice

- Basic rules of pronounciation

- Pronounciation of the letters in the alphabet

 

Pre-requisites: This is a beginner level course and doesn’t require any previous knowledge of Turkish

This course is designed for who has little knowledge of Turkish writing and speaking skills. It is also ideal for those who require a deeper knowledge of the language in order to communicate effectively in a range of everyday situations. The course continues on from Beginner-1 and will further develop students' reading, writing and conversation skills. Students will learn both Simple Present and Future tenses and several grammatical frameworks such as gerunds and conjunctions. Lessons will include listening and reading exercises, enabling students to communicate more efficiently in daily contexts and converse on a variety of topics. Below is a tentative list of topics we will be covering during this stage;

- Describing your Location and City Tour
- Communication
- Holiday Planning

 

Cultural Content:

- Shopping culture in Turkey 
- Common forms of public transport in Turkey
- Presents to buy from Turkey
- Holiday places in Turkey

- Basic rules of pronunciation
- Shopping themed role plays
- Taking notes when listening
- Pronunciation

 

Pre-requisites: Attendance who have completed stage “Turkish Beginner 1 ” or equivalent can register.

Textbook: Turkish Beginner level Course Book for Foreigners with Audio Cd + Workbook Yedi Iklim Turkce by Yunus Emre Institute A1

This course is designed for students who can already read and understand paragraphs and also write short paragraphs. The course will further cover the use of verb active, auxiliary verbs, participles, indirect speech, causative gerunds, and gerunds of time. Due to the nature of Turkish language the use of relevant suffixes with the verbs will be explained within sentences. The course will include comprehensive reading passages of a fair length. Below is a tentative list of topics we will be covering during this stage;

Pre-requisites: Attendance who have completed stages “Turkish Beginner 1 & 2” or equivalent can register.

This course is designed for students who can already read and write paragraphs of a fair length using most tenses both in direct and indirect speech. The course will include comprehensive reading passages on Turkish theatre, cinema, dance and music with details. Some Turkish terms, proverbs and poems will also be introduced in this course.

Turkish summer course is for students who wish to upgrade their speaking and listening skills a variety of contexts. Students will learn such listening strategies as listening for main ideas and details, predicting content, dealing with distractions, and using context clues to understand what they hear. Students will participate in a variety of activities designed to improve their confidence in speaking by discovering Turkish culture.

Pre-requisites: Attendance who have completed stage “Turkish Beginner-2” or equivalent can register.

Textbook: No textbook is used for this course. The instructor will provide students with necessary learning materials.
