Overview

As much as translation technologies are tools to aid in translating texts, they are also the state of the art applications to manage voluminous multiple files projects and terminology databases. They are powerful devices that change the method professional translators work by providing them with a fully dedicated translation environment to not only translate and ensure the best quality of the translation product, but also to streamline and improve the complexities of voluminous translation projects management. Terminology management is another efficient add-on included in these applications to ensure consistency with the client's preferred terminology across all projects and improve the translation quality by reducing the possibility of choosing incorrect translations for specific terms.

The workshop explains how Trados Studio 2021 can be a very valuable application, especially as far as the language elements in the project and terminology management features are concerned. Such a value can be optimized depending on the expertise of translators and project managers using the Trados Studio and the MultiTerm 2021 applications. Knowing how to efficiently handle these tools turns them into an asset for professional translators and translation project managers.

This workshop is designed for professional translators, translation studies students, translation project managers who seek to quickly explore the different capabilities of project management in Trados Studio 2021 and terminology management in MultiTerm 2021. Participating in this workshop requires having the basic knowledge of the Trados Studio application or attending the workshop titled “Trados Studio 2021 – Basic Level” beforehand.

Structure

The scope of this workshop is to familiarize participants with the main features of project management in Trados Studio 2021, in addition to creating, managing and maintaining voluminous Termbases (terminology databases) using the MultiTerm 2021 Desktop application. It contains practical, real-life examples of how to leverage Trados Studio 2021 and MultiTerm 2021 Desktop applications to streamline the translation process and improve the output quality. The workshop is structured as follows:

  • Managing Translation Projects with Trados Studio 2021
  • Terminology Management with MultiTerm 2021 Desktop
  • Examples and practical exercises of how to integrate and utilize the main features of project management and terminology databases in multiple files based projects.
     

Methodology

The focus of this training workshop is hands-on training examples, for which training sample files, projects, glossaries will be used. Some presentations will be utilized to manifest the theoretical ideas behind the practical examples used during the training.

Learning Objectives

  1. Introduction to managing translation projects in general.
  2. Exploring the life cycle of a translation project; commissioning, planning, groundwork, translation and wind-up.
  3. Investigating the different phases of translation projects; from creation to finalization.
  4. Utilizing reports to scope projects and generate word counts analysis.
  5. Basic terminology management concepts
  6. Handling Termbases from scratch;
  7. Developing Termbases from Excel glossaries;
  8. Making use of Termbases in the Editor environment of Trados Studio
  9. Exchange experiences and discuss concerns with a view to improving the usage of translation technologies as methods of projects and terminology management.

  2. Project statistics and reports;
  3. Dealing with project packages and distributing files among translators and reviewers;
  4. Sending, receiving and finalizing project files using project management techniques; 
  5. Advanced editor features;
  6. Creating Termbases from scratch
  7. Converting existing glossaries in MS Excel format for use in the MultiTerm Application.
  8. Importing and exporting terminology; 
  9. Making efficient use of Termbases in the editor environment of Trados Studio 2021.

Target Participants

This Workshop is recommended for professional translators, translation students, and translation project managers. The maximum capacity is 8 participants.

Wahba Youssef

Expert in Translation and Linguistic Technology

Wahba Youssef brings a wealth of academic knowledge to his role, holding a master’s degree in applied Linguistics from the University of Birmingham, a BA in International Business and Management from Bournemouth University, and a BA from the Faculty of Alsun (Languages) at Ain Shams University in Egypt. His academic foundation is further supported by a diploma in Information Systems Analysis and Design from NCC Education Institution. Wahba is also certified in leading translation technologies, including Trados Studio, Trados MultiTerm Desktop, and MemoQ Level PM.

Professional Journey: Wahba’s professional career began in Egypt at Dar El Farouk Publishing House, where he worked as an English-Arabic translator, specializing in disciplines such as information technology, medicine, finance, and investment. He then joined Future Group, Egypt’s leading translation agency, as a senior translator. Here, he honed his skills with various CAT tools like Trados Studio, Wordfast Pro, and MemoQ.

In 2007, Wahba transitioned to a financial translator and reviewer role at Ernst & Young in Kuwait. Following this, he relocated to London, where he contracted with local and international clients for six years, providing translation services enhanced by innovative translation technology applications.

Current Role: Today, Wahba is a senior translation specialist at the Translation and Training Center. He oversees the translation technology function at the center, promoting the use of advanced tools and project management techniques. His efforts also focus on building comprehensive terminology databases for specialized translation tracks, ensuring accuracy and consistency in translation services.
