About the Workshop

This is a practice-oriented workshop intended to prepare participants for a professional career in the translation market, either as in-house or freelance translators, working with various NGOs and IGOs. The workshop deals with various types of institutional texts produced by multilingual organizations. Using their linguistic skills and applying relevant theoretical insights, students will be trained to research institutional translation topics, prepare appropriate terminology glossaries and produce professional translations of real source texts generated by IGOs and NGOs.

Structure:

The workshop will be divided into four parts all combining a theoretical and practical approach:

  • Day 1: Introduction to institutional translation: Types, genres and functions; overview of IGOs & NGOs
  • Day 2: NGOs texts: Human rights & humanitarian work
  • Day 3: NGOs texts: Translation for charity work and activism
  • Day 4: IGOs texts: Treaties, Conventions, Declarations & Meeting documents.

Methodology: The workshop combines a theoretical and practical approach, where participants will benefit from outlining the types of institutional texts encountered by freelance or in-house translators working for various NGOs and IGOs.  Under guidance, participants will analyse selected institutional texts and complete exercises derived from real-life NGO and IGO translation work, where they will directly apply the theoretical concepts discussed and the translation techniques and skills they have acquired.

Learning Objectives:

The workshop aims to:

  1. Provide participants with practical training in translating NGO’s and IGO’s texts.
  2. Introduce participants to the different forms and genres of institutional texts.
  3. Familiarize participants with the techniques and resources used in institutional translation.
  4. Help participants identify and overcome the common problems, pitfalls and challenges associated with institutional translation work, and enable them to take principled decisions and adopt justifiable solutions when dealing with such problems.

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:

  1. Analyze and solve the difficulties encountered in translating NGO & IGO texts.
  2. Demonstrate and analyze the role of cultural differences in institutional texts and its impact on the translation process.
  3. Distinguish the different types of institutional texts and their respective functions and features
  4. Develop appropriate strategies for translating institutional texts of different types.
  5. Apply and develop language and translation resources and tools used in institutional text production.

Target Participants: This Workshop is recommended for professional and trainee translators, as well as translation studies students, already working in the field of institutional translation for various NGOs and/or IGOs or wishing to master this type of translation work.
