About the Workshop

Overview

The aim of this translation workshop is to introduce participants to the techniques and strategies which can be used to translate a wide range of linguistically sophisticated texts from fields as varied as media, sports, commerce, business, tourism, advertisement, literature and law. The instructional materials are tailored in such a way as to accommodate differences in learning needs, interests and level of readiness.

Structure

The workshop includes a combination of:

1.    Presentations
2.    Individual and small-group assignments
3.    Detailed comparisons of multiple translations of texts

Methodology

This workshop employs a combination of theoretical and practical approaches. Class assignments and homework will include students translating material from a wide range of genres, such as media, law, science and technology. Participants will learn diverse techniques and strategies culled from state-of-the-art translation methods. They will actively engage in discussing translation-specific issues and challenges so that the workshop can proceed on a personalized learning basis. Practical examples and best practices will be shared to apply the strategies proposed. Participants will also be invited to take part in group discussions.

Learning Objectives

-    Expose trainees to diverse types of linguistically sophisticated texts;
-    Introduce trainees to the linguistic properties of different types of texts;
-    Help trainees develop a wide range of strategies and techniques for translating diverse types of texts;
-    Encourage trainees to compare and contrast different translations in order to develop their critical thinking skills.

Learning Outcomes

  • Develop a robust understanding of how to critically analyze the source text;
  • Learn how to address the challenges commonly encountered by translators while rendering diverse types of texts;
  • Learn the skills of self-revision and self-proofreading;
  • Learn how to search for domain-specific terminology in specialized resources and online translation memories;
  • Exercise critical thinking by evaluating one’s own translations and those by one’s peers.

This workshop is recommended for translation students, professional translators and those who completed the “Professional Translation Basics” workshop.

About the Leader/Instructor
Dr. Hisham Ali

Hisham Ali holds a PhD in Translation Studies from the University of Leuven in Belgium. He has more than 15 years of extensive translation experience in various industries, including business, finance, communication, media, tourism and publishing. He received hands-on training at a number of internationally renowned institutions, such as The Economist Group in London. He delivered presentations on translation at the University of Leeds, the University of Leuven, the University of Nottingham, and the Institute of Culture Studies and Theatre History in Vienna. Hisham is a sworn legal translator accredited by the UAE Ministry of Justice.
