UN English Language Day
Overview
From humble beginnings as a Germanic language spoken by a small tribe of people on the fringes of Europe, English has expanded to become the global language of travel, business, mass media, academics, computing, and diplomacy. This celebration of UN English Language Day will highlight the extensive reach of English in today's world by showcasing the countries where English is spoken and discussing the regional diversity in the pronunciation and usage of English words and phrases and by emphasizing the crucial role English plays in connecting people from all over the world.
