The Translation and Interpreting Institute (TII) is part of Hamad Bin Khalifa University’s College of Humanities and Social Sciences, Qatar Foundation. It was founded in 2012 with a remit to build capacity in Qatar and the region and to function as a physical and virtual space that delivers sophisticated translator and interpreter education, high-level training in a range of languages, and quality translation and interpreting services of the highest international standards. Its core mission is to equip students for a successful career as translators and interpreters in multiple language combinations.


  • Postgraduate degree in Translation Studies or any related field
  • Fluency in English and Arabic is mandatory
  • Professional experience in English > Arabic and  Arabic > English translation
  • Experience in managing translation services, business plans and budgets
  • Experience in academic field is desirable
  • Obtain high-level knowledge of the latest translation services, technologies, methods and techniques
  • Computer literacy
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated organizational and planning skills 

Key Result Areas:

  • Set the overall strategy and direction of Translation and Training Center in coordination with the Dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHSS).
  • Prepare the business plan and annual budget for Translation and Training Center in line with the guidelines that meet the overall objective of the Center, TII, CHSS, and HBKU.
  • Monitor the annual budget, highlight any variances and ensure that appropriate measures are taken to maintain the assigned budget.
  • Maintain Translation Services culture and reputation amongst staff, customers, key stakeholders and regulatory/official bodies to ensure that the paid professional services as well as the CHSS continue to set high standards within the community and internationally.
  • Research and identify the translation needs of the market and recommend services to be provided to enhance the Translation and Training Center offerings to serve a larger audience and meet financial objectives.
  • Ensure a fruitful collaboration with other Departments at CHSS, especially as regards the implementation of appropriate student mentorship/internship programs.
  • Ensure good relationships are maintained between the Translation and Training Center and other local, regional and international institutions.
  • Keep abreast of and adopt current translation methodologies to ensure Translation and Training Center and the College remain at the forefront of the market.
  • Provide regular progress and statistical reports on activities and progress of the Translation and Training Center, ensuring it meets the required technical and financial targets.
  • Oversee the studio/lab and all related equipment and software at the Translation and Training Center, ensuring that they are functioning effectively and efficiently as required.
  • Oversee and monitor the activities of the staff and functions and take action relating to any required improvements to ensure that the outcomes meet the objectives of the Translation and Training Center section and the College.
  • Participate in the hiring and evaluation of staff, ensuring fairness and equality and that the Translation and Training Center acquires the required skills.
  • Monitor and manage the Translation and Training Center’s academic and paid services, ensuring operational compliance with the Institute’s and College’s policies, procedures, rules and regulations.
  • Attend and represent Translation and Training Center in local, regional and international conferences as well as at similar institutions and develop and maintain strong relationships for future collaboration and promotion of the Institute.
  • The candidate is responsible for all staff and other resources at the section.
  • Abide by all QF, HBKU, CHSS and the Institute’s policies and procedures and ensure all subordinate staff abide by the same.

To manage the Interpreting Unit within the Translation and Training Center (TTC), through providing interpreting services to TII clients and coordinating with all the actors involved in interpreting service provision (BPA owners, freelancers, technicians, clients, QF Finance …). S/he will also have to lead interpreting workshops, supervise Master students on the Internship Program, and coordinate the use of the interpreting room.

Key Result Areas:

  • Manage the Interpreting Unit.
  • Coordinate with contractors providing interpreting services and equipment on behalf of TII.
  • Perform the entire spectrum of interpreting services from English into Arabic and vice versa
  • Provide support and coaching for MA students wishing to learn and practice interpreting
  • Receive and process interpreting requests from internal and external clients, including sending quotations, selecting interpreters, following up with clients, processing payments, and requesting feedback after the provision of services
  • Put together interpreting teams to serve in various events according to their skills.
  • Plan and monitor the work flow of interpreting projects from A to Z.
  • Apply the quality assurance criteria adopted by TTC.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with clients.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with contractors, freelancers, and BPA owners.
  • Design and deliver interpreting-related workshops for the community.
  • Keep abreast of and adopt current interpreting methodologies to ensure that the Department and the College remain at the forefront of the services market.
  • Define interpreting needs and provide relevant guidance in terms of purchasing equipment and tools.
  • ​Other reasonable tasks as assigned by TTC Director.

Key Qualifications:

  • A Mater’s degree in interpreting/translation or equivalent. (related fields)
  • A solid, sustained background in the interpreting/translation business.
  • 5 years of experience in the professional field.
  • Knowledge of the latest interpreting services, technologies, methods and techniques.
  • Knowledge of local and internal protocols.
  • Knowledge of local and internal market needs.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent organizational and planning skills.
  • Fluency in English and Arabic; fluency in other languages is preferred (French, Spanish, German etc.)
